Laura is our HR manager she understands the balance between what the people in the business need, and what the business needs from its people. But delivering excellence isn't the only thing that keeps her smiling.
How did you join Flanagans?
After nearly 10 years in London working with different start-up businesses, my husband and I moved to Northern Ireland. Flanagan Flooring's long standing success and market position made it a really attractive role. With the company's ambitious growth plans I knew I could add real value and help Flanagan's to deliver on its goals.
What are you responsible for in your role?
HR is so much more than legal compliance or 'hiring and firing'. My role is about protecting the company legally but also understanding the balance between what the people in the business need, and what the business needs from its people and then delivering a strategy to make that happen. With 130 employees over 4 different location this can be challenging, but it's also very exciting. A big part of my role at the moment is bringing in new tools to help the sites communicate better and faster in order to evolve our internal business processes.
How are you supported to work flexibly?
My role often requires me to visit the other sites and I'm able to access my work with me wherever I go on my laptop which is very important. It's key for me to attend regular training on changes to legislation within HR and the business fully supports this personal development.
What was your most memorable moment on the job so far?
Probably last Christmas's Deck the Desk's competition - when we started the competition I never thought I'd see a pop up Christmas themed photo booth or a chocolate fountain make their way into the office! Our staff are a wonderful mix of creative and seriously competitive individuals.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I really enjoy strength and Calisthenics training and I am also improving my coding skills by working on some at home projects using Raspberry Pi.
